Specialty Maps
Visualization through maps opens up a wide range of concepts, from cartography to art. We like to cover the entire spectrum and develop new imagery.
Our World ReOrdered sits right in the middle of cartography and art. It consists of a physical globe, cut in 2538 pieces, ordered on color and framed in a rectangle grid. The challenge of map projection - how to depict a globe on a flat space – is brought back to its essence. The color graduation, neglecting the geographical lay out of the world entirely, very clearly shows the proportion between sea and land area and gives the user a moment to marvel.
We create designs for the full width of media –from sculptural installations to television material. The above example is from a series of animations we developed for a VPRO/Backlight documentary about the Middle East tensions. It combines a clear and elegant design with animations and sound effects.
We like to think of new, unique ways to visualize subjects. In the above example, we created a new take on the United Nations flag with the world map in the middle. In our flag, all member states of the United Nations are represented in equal size and placed in concentric circles. It has strong associations with the equal voting weight of each member state in the General Assemble.
The Amsterdam Zuidoost art space asked Mapping Worlds to comment on current affairs in the city district. We made the high mobility in this part of town our central theme and drew a map of the district depicting household units per building area which clearly showed where most households were living. Bearings were used to indicate households where at least one person moved house in 2007.The visual design displays a large body of micro data in a clear overall picture.
